What is PCB?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (or “PCBs”) are a group of chemical compounds made by Monsanto that were incorporated into construction materials widely-used in schools and commercial buildings erected between 1950 and 1980.

Despite the fact that Congress banned the manufacture, sale and use of PCBs in the United States in 1976, PCBs remain in place in many schools and other buildings that were constructed before 1976. The ban was based on evidence of widespread environmental contamination and PCBs’ association with cancers and other serious health effects.

Why the harm?

PCBs are on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) top 10 list of most toxic chemicals and are considered probable human carcinogens, meaning capable of causing cancer.

In addition, the EPA warns that PCBs may cause harm to the nervous system, the immune system, the reproductive system and the endocrine system. In fact, some school teachers have voiced their concern that their thyroid cancer may be due to the school’s elevated PCB levels.
